Answer Key

  1. B — Hands should be washed before and after care, after removing gloves, and after any contact with body fluids.
  2. B — Proper handwashing is the single most effective infection control measure.
  3. B — The proper technique avoids contaminating your hands with the outside of the dirty gloves.
  4. C — Residents have the right to refuse care. The CNA should respect this, report to the nurse, and document.
  5. B — Closing the curtain before personal care protects the resident's privacy and dignity.
  6. B — Face the resident, speak clearly, and minimize background noise. Shouting distorts words.
  7. B — The cuff goes on the upper arm, about 1 inch above the elbow crease, at heart level.
  8. B — Dark, concentrated urine with strong odor is a common sign of dehydration.
  9. C — Residents must be upright (60-90 degrees) during feeding to prevent aspiration.
  10. C — Use the gait belt to lower them safely to the floor. Never try to catch a falling person.
  11. C — RACE: Rescue (remove the person from danger), Alarm, Contain, Extinguish/Evacuate.
  12. B — The gait belt goes over clothing, snug but not tight, at the waist.
  13. B — Proper body mechanics: bend knees, straight back, lift with legs.
  14. B — Pillows between bony prominences prevent pressure sores from bones pressing together.
  15. B — Dress the weak side first, undress the strong side first.
